The Cortland Red Dragon football team coming off of another huge win this Saturday. The Dragons had a hard week of practice leading up to this game the Dragon’s worked day in and day out learning new plays and getting ready for the Buff St. Tigers.
The Dragons hit the road this week for their first away game of the season on Friday. The team was ready for war and eagerly waiting for the next day to come. The day hits, Saturday 9/17, the Dragons are off to the races putting up 35 points in the very first quarter, Junior quarterback Zack Boyes was slinging passes left and right racking up points quick to put the Tigers out early and kill their momentum. By the time the second quarter was over the score was 56-0.
Heading to the locker room for half time happy and smiling but still ready to go because the job wasn’t finished yet. The guys on the team sat quietly focused on their goal as they wait for their coaches to come and talk to them, Coach Fitzpatrick was happy as well hyping the team up and giving them changes to the defense and special teams trying to perfect the teams game-plan.
The Dragons line up and take off for the second half of football. Many of the starters were sitting and cheering on some younger guys who don’t play as often to get them rest and ready for the next game and prevent pointless injuries. To the Cortland dragons these are the best games where you can get all the guys you travelled into play and just have fun.
As the fourth quarter came the score was 66-0 and there was no chance of a comeback. As the last few seconds struck down the Buff St. Tigers marched down the field and put in their first score of the day making the score 66-7 after the Tigers made the field goal.
Although Cortland was looking for a shut out they still dominated in every way possible. This is what matters the most they played as hard as they could for the rest of the team. Everyone sticks their necks out for their brothers and everyone has each other’s backs which is exactly what happened yesterday.
I was able to talk to some key players after the game and they all had very interesting things to say Junior QB Zack Boyes said “The team played great together today and it was a hell of a day.” Jaden AlfanoStJohn had a short sentence but a good one he said “Hey man all smiles around here.” And last but certainly not least JJ Lapp said “I’m just having fun my guy.” All these statements are what makes football the great game that it is. Coach Fitzpatrick told the team he was proud of them and they need to continue their hardworking as they go into the bye-week.
