The Cortland Red Dragon football team wins it 48-28 over Wittenberg last Saturday September 3rd. This week’s game was a crazy one, being right there on the sideline and in action was amazing.
The red dragons came out blazing as Sophomore Zack Boyes the quarterback threw it to Senior wide receiver JJ Lapp for a huge touchdown on the second play of the first drive. It was a huge momentum starter; the dragons were playing hard on defense consistently making huge plays and great stops. As the dragons get back on offense there the spark is again between Zack and JJ, the ball is let loose caught by JJ with a cornerback right on him. The defensemen misses the tackle and JJ is off to the races too fast to be caught; gone like the wind. The defense keeps the energy up as they come out looking crisp on the first game of the year making great tackles. Wittenberg is marching down the field and are in the Red-Zone looking for a score, they draw up a pass play and BOOM Josh Cordero with an amazing interception somehow managing to keep both feet in bounds to save the drive for the defense.
As halftime hits, the team is juiced up and hyped ready to get back out there and go, as the Red Dragons walk back out there the crowd screams, the roaring gets the team amped up and ready for the second half. The offense takes the field eager to put one in the end zone. On the first drive of the half the team scores with a huge touchdown run from Sophomore Jaden AlfanoStJohn cutting players and breaking tackles no one could keep up with the speed. He ran off the field and was welcomed with hugs from his teammates. The crowd was screaming from such an explosive play the Red Dragons had the momentum still. The defense went out and played hard but unfortunatley was scored on after a long defense drive. Back to the offenses turn as they try to maintain a lead and are marching down the field, the team finds themselves in the Red-Zone and decide to go for a pass play, interception Wittenberg’s ball, the sudden turnover puts the defense back on the field. They have been playing great all day, giving it there all in another very long drive making the stop. It was amazing the defense coming off of two drives stopping the Wittenberg offense after they had the momentum after a score and an interception.
The game ended and the score was 48-28 Red Dragon victory first game of the year the team was very excited and lined up shook hands like men and gave respect to the other team as always, not only was the team excited and pumped up but the best part was the team looking up to their families who were there to watch them succeed. The Dragons ran to the side and took a knee listening to all of our coaches about out game because although they won there was many mistakes and much to learn from. This Saturday the Dragons came out hot for their first game back since last season giving it everything they had and coming away with the win.
The Red Dragons next contest will be Saturday, September 17th at Buffalo State where they look stay hot and come out with a win on the road.
