{"id":823,"date":"2025-03-26T13:37:14","date_gmt":"2025-03-26T17:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/crystallize\/?page_id=823"},"modified":"2025-04-04T12:12:29","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T16:12:29","slug":"marc-marin","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/crystallize\/marc-marin\/","title":{"rendered":"Marc Marin"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Convoy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">We left Kuwait City early one April morning<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Just as the infernal desert sun was dawning<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Off for Baghdad and the unknown<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">We all tried to keep an upbeat tone<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Armed but utterly unprepared<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">A feeling of fear was shared<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">A lengthy stop at the border<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Convoy lost all sense of order<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Spent the night on a Humvee hood<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Desert chill was withstood<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Images trapped in my brain<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Who knows how many were slain<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Charred hulls of Iraqi tanks<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Barefoot children among their ranks<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Poverty cannot describe what I witnessed<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">This was a place good fortune had missed<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Desperate citizens asking for water and food<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">To our rifles our hands remained glued<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">We wilt in the oppressive desert heat<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Fatigue grips us from our head to our feet<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Finally, Baghdad presents itself in the distance<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">You see evidence of the Iraqis\u2019 resistance<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">We snake through the shattered city, across the Tigris River<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Your mind imagining what this strange land will deliver<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><strong>&#8220;Convoy&#8221; was selected by Hai-Dang Phan as a finalist in the Distinguished Voices Poetry Contest\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u201cWritten in strict rhyming couplets in the disciplined voice of a soldier, &#8220;Convoy&#8221; attempts to give order to the chaos of war, an order threatened by the needless violence and human suffering the poem also bears reluctant witness to.\u201d -Hai-Dang Phan, author of <em>Reenactments<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0in 12.0pt 0in\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;color: black\">A veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, <strong>Marc Marin<\/strong> earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in Journalism from Northern Illinois University. He spent 12 years in the newspaper industry before moving into teaching in 2017.
