It was Little Jimmy\u2019s first time being at a zoo and he could hardly wait to see the elephants. \u201cI\u00a0wanna\u00a0touch it\u2019s ears Mommy\u201d he said dragging Amy in the direction of the elephant exhibit. Amy looked at\u00a0Mike, her husband of\u00a0almost 5\u00a0years, with a wrinkled face.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cWe\u2019ll meet up in 30 minutes at the big blue slide\u201d he said to her.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy rolled her eyes and walked away with Jimmy towards the elephant exhibit while\u00a0Mike\u00a0took\u00a0his\u00a0older two kids, Krissy and Kegan, to another part of the zoo.\u00a0Mike\u00a0hated when Amy acted like this. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m raising and controlling four kids and not three\u201d he would repeat in his head every time she responded this way.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">She knew Jimmy was going to cause a scene if the elephants weren\u2019t their first stop. The therapist told\u00a0her\u00a0to pick\u00a0her\u00a0battles and that wasn\u2019t a battle\u00a0she\u00a0was\u00a0willing to fight.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cUnfortunately\u00a0kids are going to have meltdowns, Amy, its\u00a0normal\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cNot meltdowns like Jimmy. No one understands how hard it is to avoid them\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cMaybe some meltdowns just aren\u2019t worth having if it stresses you out this much. Who cares if he wants to eat one more cookie sometimes\u2026if it\u2019s going to ruin your night may as well just let him have another cookie\u201d?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy thought back to this conversation with her therapist too often. Anytime she had to tell Jimmy no she pondered it for at least five minutes to decide if it was worth him backlashing at her.\u00a0Mike\u00a0never understood this about Amy. The three kids would hear them go at it every night.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cWhy can\u2019t you be the bad cop every once in a while\u201d\u00a0Mike\u00a0would shout at Amy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cThe therapist said to pick our battles\u00a0Mike.\u00a0Jimmy watching tv while we ate dinner didn\u2019t ruin anyone\u2019s night, but yours\u201d Amy was shouting back at\u00a0Mike\u00a0even louder now.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201c\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cYou\u2019re never home anyways why do you care what I do with the kids\u201d Amy said with passion then quickly got quiet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">She knew she had pushed it this time.\u00a0Mike\u00a0shut off the light sitting on the nightstand next to his side of the bed and rolled over. He put one hand on the back of her neck\u00a0and one on her hips\u00a0pulling her closer until she could feel his whole body against the back of hers. She always knew to not pull away at this point; it would just make him angrier. That\u2019s how every night ended.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy placed blame on Jimmy\u2019s\u00a0Pre-K\u00a0teacher for getting him all excited for the zoo.\u00a0Of course\u00a0in morning circle Jimmy was eager to brag to all his classmates about his family vacation to the zoo over the upcoming long weekend. His teacher was a first year and seemed to be trying a little too hard to get the kids to like her. All her and Jimmy talked about was what animals\u00a0he\u00a0will see and how she\u2019s so excited to hear all about\u00a0his\u00a0experience. Amy stopped herself. She was so caught up in thinking about her anger toward Jimmy\u2019s teacher for getting him riled up that she didn\u2019t notice when Jimmy stopped pulling on her shirt. She looked down in fear.\u00a0His\u00a0little fingers were no longer grabbing the light blue fabric anymore like his life depended on it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Little Jimmy was gone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">As\u00a0Mike\u00a0walked away with his two eldest daughters they talked about Amy. \u201cWhat\u2019s been going on with\u00a0you and\u00a0mom\u201d was the only thing they seemed to be talking about lately.\u00a0Mike\u2019s response seemed to sound like a record player stating that mom has just been stressed lately\u00a0with work and housework\u00a0and everything will be okay. By now, it was like muscle memory.\u00a0Amy doesn\u2019t work. In\u00a0fact\u00a0she never did; and the girls were starting to catch on. Her and\u00a0Mike\u00a0had met when Kissy and Kegan were young and being a stepmother was not how she fanaticized her future marriage to be. But\u00a0Mike\u00a0stole her heart and that was something she would have to accept. They married and with\u00a0Mike\u2019s job, he decided Amy staying at home with the kids would be best. Nothing has changed, from what Krissy and Kegan could see, so what was causing all this stress in Amy\u2019s life?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy sat down at a nearby bench that was meant for families to sit and eat an overpriced meal. The smell of\u00a0french\u00a0fries and vinegar overwhelmed her and suddenly she was hungry. She felt a weird sense of relief that Jimmy wasn\u2019t attached at her hip. Something was wrong. She felt no motivation or reason to get up and look for him. She loved Jimmy, he was her son, but she\u2019d had enough. This was her escape.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">She gazed out at the playground watching all the kids. She stared at a big blue\u00a0slide in particular. The slide was the same shade of blue as the big beach blanket her family had. She reminisced about the times her family would pack up a cooler and all go down to the beach for the day. They\u2019d lay their big blue blanket in the hot sand and watch the waves. After a couple hours her and her sisters would lay down and watch the clouds go by in the blue sky. Calling out what figure they could make out of each one; eventually leading to a screaming match of who can make up more. Her eyes got more and more focused on the slide until she heard a high-pitched scream breaking her focus. It wasn\u2019t Jimmy; Amy knew Jimmy\u2019s screams from\u00a0all of\u00a0the fits he\u2019s thrown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">It wasn\u2019t until she heard Krissy and Kegan coming up behind her that she snapped back to reality. Little Jimmy was gone. What is she going to tell her family? As she heard their voices get closer, she panicked. Amy stood up fast and spun around \u201cLittle Jimmy is on the playground\u201d she said\u00a0too\u00a0quickly\u00a0as she blinked away white spots in her vision because she stood up too fast. The three of them took a seat next to Amy pretending to watch the kids on the playground in awkward silence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cI don\u2019t see\u00a0Jimmy\u201d one of them said in a questioning voice. It didn\u2019t matter to Amy who said it\u2026one of them was going to notice eventually.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cReally? He was just headed down the blue slide\u201d she responded back without looking up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy didn\u2019t know if she was scared to tell\u00a0Mike\u00a0and the girls that Jimmy was gone or if she was more scared to admit to herself that she had let it go this far without reacting the way she knows she should have. She hoped that\u00a0Jimmy would just show up and she could avoid the whole thing, like she was used to doing with\u00a0him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cAmy come with me to get the kids some drinks and food\u201d said\u00a0Mike. Without responding she stood up and started walking towards the food stand. The two of them stood in silence in the long line that was out the two double doors until it was their time to order. \u201cWe\u2019ll have three bottled waters, one cheeseburger, and three hot dogs with only ketchup\u201d\u00a0Mike\u00a0said then quickly added \u201coh and one piece of pizza for my wife.\u201d\u00a0Mike\u00a0let go of Amy\u2019s arm he was gripping so tightly to grab his wallet.\u00a0Amy gave a fake smile to the cashier and headed for the bathroom.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">While washing her hands with the soap that smelled like the doctor\u2019s office, she saw an exit sign in the mirror reflection. Under it was a sign\u00a0made form computer paper\u00a0taped to\u00a0the back\u00a0door that said \u201cEMERGENCIES ONLY\u201d in all blue letters. Amy chuckled to herself thinking, \u201cwhat kind of emergency would happen at the zoo besides all the animals escaping their exhibits?\u201d Ironically not acknowledging that she in fact was having an emergency\u2026and it wasn\u2019t the zoo animals escaping. She took a deep breath and headed for the door.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Krissy and Kegan were standing with\u00a0Mike\u00a0talking loud with their hands\u00a0swinging in circles.\u00a0Mike\u00a0looked overwhelmed not paying attention to the heavy tray of food he was about to drop. Amy hesitantly walked up to the three of them pretending nothing was happening.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cMOM!\u201d Kegan shouted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cMom we can\u2019t find Little Jimmy anywhere!\u201d Krissy followed up with, so she didn\u2019t feel left out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Mike\u00a0took control of the situation, as always.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cNow let\u2019s calm down and take a step back from the\u00a0situation\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cWe went to the blue slide to see if\u00a0Jimmy was there and he wasn\u2019t so then we searched the whole playground and we can\u2019t find him\u00a0anywhere\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy was silent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Mike\u00a0shoved the tray of food into Amy\u2019s arms\u00a0and walked fast towards the playground.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cLittle Jimmy\u201d he yelled. Getting louder and louder each time he yelled it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Soon enough people were crowded around the four of them yelling Jimmy\u2019s name to help find him.\u00a0A close by mother ran to the police station on site to get their attention. The woman and two cops came running over. The two cops were in their late 30\u2019s or early 40\u2019s.\u00a0They wore navy blue uniforms which caught Amy\u2019s eye. All she could think about is how hot it must be to run around in them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">While sitting in a hard metal chair Amy placed her hands under her thighs to avoid her highs touching the cold metal.\u00a0Mike\u00a0had refused to come in and answer questions about the sequence of events because why would he \u201csit there and answer questions he doesn\u2019t know when he can be looking for Jimmy?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cHow old is he?\u201d said one officer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201c4\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cWhat was he\u00a0wearing\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201c\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cMa\u2019am I know this is difficult but the more information you can give us the easier this will be\u201d the officer said in a sterner voice now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cJeans he was wearing jeans and a black t-rex shirt\u201d Amy spitted out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cIs there any other information you can tell us that would help us?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cElephants. He loves the elephants.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">The two men looked at each other and stood up at the same time as if they had practiced this routine. A woman came up behind Amy offering her a cup of water. \u201cThanks\u201d Amy said grabbing the water and gulping it down in one sip.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">The woman sat in the seat next to Amy, where\u00a0Mike\u00a0would have been sitting. Amy looked at her as she sat and said, \u201cblue dress pants, that\u2019s what I would wear to work too.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">The woman looking at her confused asked where she works and Amy responded that she doesn\u2019t work,\u00a0Mike\u00a0had a job that provided enough so she stayed at home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t help but notice the scratch on your hand it\u2019s bleeding a little can I offer you a first aid kit?\u201d the woman asked politely.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy had been so overwhelmed with everything going on that she didn\u2019t realize she had been scratching and digging away at her skin. She tends to do this when she feels anxious.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cSure\u00a0I\u2019ll take a band aid\u201d Amy said quietly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cOh\u00a0wow you also have a bruise on your arm! Did you fall out there?\u201d the woman said surprised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Before Amy could answer\u00a0Mike\u00a0came bursting through the door. Amy had seen this sight too often that it didn\u2019t faze her. The woman in the blue pants jumped.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cA band\u00a0aid? Really Amy? How old are you?\u201d\u00a0Mike\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cShe had a cut and was bleeding a decent amount it was no trouble\u201d said the woman in the blue pants.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cLet\u2019s go you don\u2019t need any more help\u201d\u00a0Mike\u00a0said grabbing Amy by the arm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">He had grabbed right where the bruise was. Right where he had been holding on in the food line. Right where he always grabbed Amy when he was taking her somewhere.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">The woman quickly grabbed a card out of her pocket and shoved it into Amy\u2019s hand saying, \u201cif you think of anything else please don\u2019t hesitate to call.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy and\u00a0Mike\u00a0walked out of the little police station trailer and Amy had to blink her eyes a couple times to let them adjust to the lighting change. People were still yelling Jimmy\u2019s name and looking in dumb spots like under the picnic benches. This made Amy laugh, why would he be under the bench? If Amy was going to run away, she thought she would get on one\u00a0of those big blue busses that travel the\u00a0state\u00a0and she would ride it until she felt she was far enough away.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy felt a light tug on the bottom of her shirt, she turned around and saw it was Little Jimmy pulling at her with a huge smile. She looked up and saw the older policeman in all blue shaking his head while laughing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cYou had us worried little man\u201d he said looking at Jimmy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">How ironic Amy thought to herself, the cop was more worried than I was. After all the chaos of thanking everyone who helped\u00a0Mike\u00a0decided it would be best for them to leave the zoo now while they had everyone together. He joked around with everyone around him about it, but Amy knew the second\u00a0Mike\u00a0had her alone he was going to have some words for her.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">The ride home was silent except for the muffled noise coming from Kegan\u2019s headphones. Amy could just barely make out the song that she was listening to, Love\u00a0the\u00a0Way You Lie by Rihanna and Eminem. She started humming along until\u00a0Mike\u00a0turned to her and gave her a side eye look. She stopped and looked out the window as she thought about the day. She was confused herself; she couldn\u2019t quite grasp why she reacted the way she did.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Later that night, the three kids were tucked away in bed but not sleeping because of the sound of Amy and\u00a0Mike\u00a0fighting. The fight went as usual until they heard a loud crash. Krissy came running down the hallway and pushed their door open with no hesitation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy was standing with a baseball bat over\u00a0Mike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Mike\u00a0was unconscious and bleeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cCall 911\u201d Amy yelled to Krissy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">***\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Blue and red flashing lights lit up the house. Amy was shaking and afraid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cEverything happened so fast\u201d she kept repeating in her head while trying to think of exactly what happened. Just then, there was a knock on the door and two officers walked in followed by a few paramedics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy franticly\u00a0lead\u00a0them to the bedroom, where\u00a0Mike\u00a0was laying. The paramedics were able to get\u00a0Mike\u00a0on a stretcher and get some vitals. Amy didn\u2019t react. Once again, she found herself numb to the situation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">One of the officers pulled Amy into a separate room and asked if he could ask her a couple questions about what happened that night. The officer followed Amy into the kitchen and had a seat at the table.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cTo your best ability can you tell me what happened tonight?\u201d the officer said in a sterner voice than what she expected.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy sat there for a while trying to piece the events together but all she could think about was how fast everything had happened. The officer seemed to be getting annoyed with the silence in the room.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cIs there anyone we can call for you\u201d said the voice of a woman in the background who seemed concerned about Amy and the kids.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cTrish\u2026 Trish Ridings\u201d Amy said hesitantly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Trish was Amy\u2019s therapist and she understood that it took Amy a while to answer questions. She would understand. Amy turned around to find the woman leaning against the cabinet. She had blue dress pants on, the same as the ones she had seen earlier. It was the officer that had offered her a band-aid.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">They all sat in the kitchen awkwardly until headlights came through the kitchen window. Amy didn\u2019t move. The women went and greeted Trish at the door and seemed to stand there for a long time before returning to the kitchen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cHello officer\u201d Trish said to the man sitting across from Amy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cCan we please have the room\u201d before he could answer Trish sat down at the table next to Amy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cHi Amy\u201d she said in her soft voice. That\u2019s how she always started their sessions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">***\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cWell\u00a0I\u2019m happy you found Jimmy\u201d Trish said to her while setting down her pen that she used to take notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cJust out of curiosity where did they find him?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cThey saw him wondering around the bathrooms\u201d Amy responded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cAnd how did this make you feel?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201c\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Trish waited patiently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cI guess if I\u2019m being honest I didn\u2019t and still don\u2019t feel\u00a0anything\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cCan you expand on that?\u201d she asked hesitantly trying not to push Amy too far.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cI feel numb. It\u2019s so weird I felt an odd feeling of relief when Jimmy went missing. Like maybe this would be good for him. You know? To get away from this family.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cDo you want to get away from your family Amy?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cI\u2019ve thought about\u00a0it\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cThe officer who met me at the door said she helped you at the zoo today. She was\u00a0concerned\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201c\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cShe mentioned something about a bruise and bleeding and how\u00a0Mike\u00a0reacted.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">Amy sat silent and thought to herself how fast it took the woman to notice\u00a0Mike\u2019s behavior. Was it that obvious to her? The way\u00a0Mike\u00a0treated her. It took Amy two years to realize how messy their marriage was.
