Leaves appear whole but under greater magnification leaves are highly dissected into strands of cells&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/bryophytes\/field-guide\/liverworts\/trichocolea-tomentella\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #000080\"><em>Trichocolea tomentella<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><strong>1b.<\/strong> Leaves are whole.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2a.<\/strong> Liverworts stem appears as a &#8220;y&#8221;, approximately halfway of the stems length divides into 2 stems&#8212;<span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2b.<\/strong> Liverworts stem is not divided&#8212;<span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>4.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3a.<\/strong> Liverwort is missing leaves along the stem, under-leaves are have 4 blunt teeth&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/bryophytes\/field-guide\/liverworts\/leafy\/bazzania-denudata\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #000080\"><em><strong>Bazzania denudata.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3b. <\/strong>Liverwort is not readily missing leaves, under-leaves are segmented 4 or more times (most common liverwort)&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/bryophytes\/field-guide\/liverworts\/leafy\/bazzania-trilobata\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #000080\"><em><strong>Bazzania trilobata.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<strong>4a. <\/strong>Leaves are connected in a transversely (like a cross) or in a succubous (like shingles on a roof, upper edge of leaf is covered by the lower edge of the next leaf up) manner to the stem&#8212;<strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">5.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>4b.<\/strong> Leaves are connected in a incubous (opposite of shingles on a roof, upper edge of the lower leaf covers the bottom edge of the next leaf style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Lophocolea heterophylla.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>7b.<\/strong> Under-leaves divided only half of length, Leaves are ovate with no teeth&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/bryophytes\/field-guide\/liverworts\/leafy\/chiloscyphus-pallescens-ehrh-ex-hoffm-dumort\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;text-decoration: underline\">Chiloscyphus curvifolia.<\/em> <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<strong>11a.<\/strong> Leaves are bilobed with both lobes being noticeably serrated&#8212;<a nemorosa.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>11b. <\/strong>Leaves are not serrated&#8212;<span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>12.<\/strong><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<strong>12a.<\/strong> Liverwort is between 2 cm to 12 cm long&#8212;<span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong><a style=\"color: exsertifolia.<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>12b. <\/strong>Liverwort is around 1 cm long&#8212;<a pumila.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<strong>13a. <\/strong>Very common moss growing in dark circular patches on living trees&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.cortland.edu\/bryophytes\/field-guide\/liverworts\/leafy\/frullania-eboracensis\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #000080\"><strong><em>Frullania Eboracensis.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>13b.<\/strong> Found growing on soil, decaying logs\/stumps, rocks, or with mosses&#8212;<span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>14.
