Atrichum altecristatum<\/em>\u00a0formerly known as\u00a0Atrichum undulatum<\/i> var. altecristatum<\/i> Renauld & Cardot, Bot. Gaz., is one of the more abundant\u00a0mosses present at Hoxie Gorge. The WAVY STARBURST MOSS is made distinct by its undulating or wavy leaves. when dry the leaves will crisp up into a cork screw like formation, as seen below.<\/p>\n

\"Atrichum-altecristatum-AH-2\"<\/p>\n

Atrichum altecristatum <\/em>is an acrocarpous moss and generally grows in green cushion like mats reaching 3cm in hight. The preferred habit of this moss is moist soil in\u00a0shade. The capsules are raised above the leaves in a slightly curved\u00a0fashion. The operculum (lid) of the capsule is long and narrow. Upon reaching maturity the lid opens and exposes the peristome teeth<\/p>\n
